Welcome to dirtn.app. By using this site, you agree to the terms below. This is a plain-English legal document written by the site's owner, not a law firm — it hasn't been reviewed by an attorney, and it isn't legal advice for you either. If you're using this site or its data for anything that matters, verify independently.

1. What this site is

dirtn.app is an entertainment and informational reference tool. It answers, as best the public record allows, whether a given public figure is currently alive or deceased. It is a novelty search engine built on top of open data — it is not a news source, a medical record, a legal record, an obituary service, or a substitute for verified reporting. Nothing on this site should be treated as an authoritative or final determination of a person's status.

2. Where the data comes from

dirtn.app does not maintain its own database of biographical facts. Every result is pulled from:

  • Wikidata, whose structured data (including birth/death dates and status) is released under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal public domain dedication. We query Wikidata directly and reflect what its contributors have entered.
  • Wikipedia, whose article text is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). Where we display excerpts, summaries, or images sourced from Wikipedia, we attribute the source article and its contributors, and any such reused text remains available under the same CC BY-SA terms. Images on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons may carry their own individual licenses (public domain, CC BY, CC BY-SA, etc.) — check the file's own page for specifics before reusing it yourself.

Both projects are collaboratively edited by volunteers and can be incomplete, outdated, vandalized, or simply wrong at any given moment. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia, or Wikidata.

3. No warranty of accuracy — read this part

This matters more here than on the average website: dirtn.app can be wrong about whether someone is alive or dead. Sources can lag behind real-world events, contain vandalism or unverified edits, conflate two people with the same name, or simply not have been updated yet. We do not independently verify deaths through medical, governmental, or news sources before displaying a status.

The site, its content, and every verdict it displays are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. Do not use dirtn.app as the sole basis for any decision where accuracy matters — including, without limitation, reporting a death, notifying family, making a financial, medical, legal, insurance, or estate-related decision, or publishing anything as fact. If a result matters, verify it against a primary source (a news outlet, an official register, or the family).

4. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Donny West and dirtn.app will not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, reputation, revenue, or opportunity, arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, this site — including damages arising from a status displayed on this site being inaccurate, outdated, or incorrect. This limitation applies regardless of the legal theory (contract, tort, negligence, or otherwise) and even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages. Some jurisdictions don't allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain damages, so some of the above limitations may not apply to you.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Scrape, bulk-harvest, or systematically extract data from dirtn.app at a volume or rate that degrades service for other users (query Wikidata directly for that — it's built for it).
  • Use the site to harass, defame, or make false claims about a real person's health or status.
  • Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, reverse-engineer, or gain unauthorized access to the site or its infrastructure.
  • Misrepresent dirtn.app's output as verified fact, journalism, or an official record in any publication, broadcast, or legal proceeding.
  • Use the site in any way that violates applicable law.

We may suspend or block access for anyone abusing the service.

6. Corrections, disputes, and takedowns

Because we don't host our own facts, the fastest fix for a wrong status is usually to correct it at the source — see our Corrections page for step-by-step instructions on editing Wikidata directly.

DMCA / copyright takedown notices. If you believe content displayed on dirtn.app infringes your copyright, send a notice to donnywest@gmail.com including: (1) identification of the copyrighted work, (2) identification of the material you claim is infringing and its location on the site, (3) your contact information, (4) a statement of good-faith belief that the use is unauthorized, and (5) a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the notice is accurate and you're authorized to act on the copyright owner's behalf. We will review and respond in a reasonable timeframe, and remove or disable access to material found to infringe.

Urgent correction requests (for example, a living person incorrectly shown as deceased) should go to donnywest@gmail.com with "URGENT CORRECTION" in the subject line. We'll investigate and, where warranted, apply a manual override while the upstream source is corrected.

7. Third-party links

dirtn.app links to Wikidata, Wikipedia, and occasionally other reference or news sources. We don't control and aren't responsible for the content, accuracy, or availability of any site we link to.

8. Advertising

This site is supported by advertising, including ads served through Google AdSense. Ads are provided by third parties and we don't control their content. See our Privacy Policy for details on advertising cookies and your choices.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site evolves. The "Last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [State/Jurisdiction placeholder — to be finalized by the site owner, e.g., "the State of California, USA"], without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes will be handled in the courts of that jurisdiction, to the extent legally permissible.
